About

Joshua Michael Brown, better known by his stage name Wahid, is an American rapper and recording artist born on November 24th, 1993, to parents of Jamaican descent in New York City. He lived in the Bronx until 1998 when his parents relocated the family to Orlando, Florida, where he grew up. Wahid started writing and rapping at age twelve and has recorded and released music online since high school.

Despite growing up in Orlando with few local musical role models, Wahid created his style and sound by drawing inspiration from different sources. His father raised him on a booming system of rocksteady, dancehall, and reggae dubplates, while his older brother exposed him to the classics of hip-hop’s second Golden Age as a teenager in the late ’00s. Wahid states, “Nas is the artist who made me want to rap…listening to GZA’s Liquid Swords made me good at it, and studying Black Thought helped refine my skills.” He and his friends tried to find open mics and shows, but they were few and far between. When Wahid attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, he became fully immersed in a flourishing hip-hop community.

He started "Cap 6", a group of aspiring artists comprised of him and his closest friends on campus, and built a local buzz. When he returned home, Orlando had finally incubated a diverse scene encompassing rap, folk, electronic music, and indie-slanting guitar rock. Wahid's unique style blends classic MC traditions with forward-thinking cadences and melodies. His thematic approach focuses on spirituality and nuance, while being imaginative and visceral. Through hard work and dedication, he has become a talented and respected musician, earning admiration and respect from his peers and fans.
His first “official” EP, Seven, was released to all major streaming platforms on November 9th, 2018. Wahid’s notoriety started to ascend after he co-founded the nine-person collective “seeyousoon” in 2020. A national tour with the band 99 Neighbors and an imminent major label deal ostensibly brought them to the precipice of massive success. Unfortunately, “seeyousoon” disbanded due to creative differences.

After a downcast period of self-reflection, Wahid wrote the imaginative and visceral anthems that would eventually comprise his EP, feast, by ravens, released under exclusive license to Innovative Leisure.

Wahid continues to improve and evolve his skills, always striving to reach new heights as an artist. His ability to captivate audiences with his powerful lyrics and captivating imagery is a testament to his artistry and dedication to his craft.
